There is nothing as thrilling as getting a call from the White House, and yet, Michael Skaff of Skaff Floral Creations has gotten the call numerous times over the past twenty plus years. A noted floral designer who recently opened up shop in Hinsdale, Ill., Michael Skaff has been sharing his floral arranging and design talents with the White House staff for large events since the Clinton administration.
A Special Invitation. When asked why he was specifically chosen by the White House, when there are florists and flower shops throughout the United States, he mentioned his affiliation with the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD), which means he has higher credentials than most in the industry. AIFD brought together a select group of florists to design for larger events when the White House’s request was made.
“Every time I get the invitation to work with the staff at the White House, I feel extremely proud to be selected for these elite events.” Skaff said. “It never ceases to instill in me a higher sense of patriotism and civic pride.”
Here are just a few of the many events Skaff has designed for: the 1993 Clinton Inauguration, the 2001 and 2005 Bush Inaugurations; the Kennedy Center Honors; the 4th of July White House Picnic; the 2015 Governor’s Ball; and Michelle Obama’s Healthy Lunchtime Challenge & Kids’ State Dinner.
“When you are designing for the White House it is not simply for the event, but also for the personal residences and where tour groups may walk throughout the day. Everything needs to be freshened up on a daily basis, and when you create your designs you must take the color and style of the house and room in which it will be placed into consideration to make sure it lives up to the grandeur of the setting,” said Skaff.
Skaff is the former vice president of design for FTD, where he worked on product development with Vera Wang, Better Homes and Gardens, and the Smithsonian. He’s studied floral design in Japan and Europe, and his articles have been featured in numerous publications.
Hinsdale Connection. When asked, “Why open Skaff Floral Creations studio in Hinsdale?” Michael responded, “My career has drawn me to the western suburbs of Chicago. I have come to love the area and its people and wanted to embrace being a part of the community. Coming from a close-knit community in Connecticut, whenever I had the opportunity to be in Hinsdale, it always felt like a natural fit, mirroring the aspects I love about my hometown. For me, Hinsdale is simply the right choice.”
Skaff Floral Creations is not your everyday flower shop. The floral studio specializes in events such as weddings, fundraisers, corporate and special celebrations (dinner parties, showers, anniversaries). Skaff also provides floral services for home and business décor.
Michael is available by appointment only. To arrange for a private consultation about your upcoming event or other floral décor needs, call Skaff Floral Creations at 331-801-0018 or email [email protected]
