Michael J. Skaff is not your everyday florist but a specialist, concentrating on weddings, special events and holiday home decorating.

From planning the floral creations for the Governor’s dinner at the White House to the centerpiece on a Hinsdale hostesses’ table, Michael J. Skaff has seen it, done it and loved it all.

Skaff Floral Creations is open for business, by appointment, at 19 N. Grant St., Hinsdale.

Skaff is not your everyday florist but a specialist, concentrating on weddings, special events (parties, showers, anniversaries) and holiday home decorating. Other services offered by Skaff Floral Creations are corporate and residential weekly flowers, custom silk and permanent botanicals, funeral arrangements and much more.

“There’s nothing more rewarding than a career that can have a profound effect on a individual,” Skaff said. “I get to share in a client’s personal life experience for a moment in time and with flowers capture the emotions, making the event simply unforgettable.”

He has more than 30 years experience in the floral, interior design and visual merchandising industries, and he comes to Hinsdale with impressive credentials.

As evidence of his artistry, he was selected as floral designer for Bill Clinton’s 1993 presidential inauguration as well as George W. Bush’s presidential inaugurations in both 2001 and 2005. In March, 2015, he was floral designer for the Governor’s dinner at the White House, where he continues as a freelance design consultant.

In 2003, he was a member of the design team for the 75th Annual Academy Awards Presentation, and Eunice Shriver employed Skaff as floral designer for her charity fundraiser for Best Buddies.

“Michael has a fantastic pedigree, having conceptualized and designed for the White House, the Kennedy Center Honors, executive events and magnificent weddings,” said Larry Plawsky, senior vice president of Ticketmaster. “He is meticulous with incredible attention to detail and a natural instinct, honed over the years, for color. He is passionate about his craft but always willing to listen, be flexible and consider new ideas. He’s certifiably the best.”

Skaff has planned and executed displays and vignettes for Tiffany & Co., Seasons Four Outdoor Living, DeScenza Diamonds and The Rockport Company.

“My career has drawn me to the western suburbs of Chicago,” Skaff said. “I have come to love the people and the experiences I have had here, and I want to truly embrace being a part of it by opening up floral studio. Coming from a close community in Connecticut, whenever I would have the opportunity to be in Hinsdale, it always felt like a natural fit, mirroring the aspects I love about my home town. For me, Hinsdale is simply the right choice.”

In addition, Skaff is a member of the International Color Marketing Group (CMG). This prestigious group of industry leaders sets the trends for color and design. Many of Skaff’s clients utilize his knowledge of color trends not only in creating floral arrangements but also in forecasting marketing trends.
Skaff is the former vice president of design for FTD, where he worked on product development initiatives with Todd Oldham, Vera Wang, Better Homes and Gardens and The Smithsonian Institute. He was instrumental in the development of the high-end floral catalog for FTD.

“We’ve worked with Michael Skaff over the past six years to create several collections of branded flower arrangements,” said Sondra Newkirk, senior director, Meredith Corp. “His design work is excellent. His tremendous knowledge of flowers and plants combined with a keen sense of style resulted in dozens of designs we proudly associated with the Better Homes and Gardens® name.”

Skaff is an acclaimed speaker and writer, and his articles have been featured in Modern Bride; Floral Management; Victoria Magazine, FTD Magazine and The Boston Globe. He was the featured designer in the premier issue of In Bloom, one of FTD’s magazines. Skaff was also publisher of At Home with Michael Skaff, a seasonal magazine with the editorial focus on flowers in the home.

He has extensive experience as a stylist and in visual merchandising, working as consultant for such companies as Polaroid and AGFA Film. He was design director and product development consultant for Smithers Oasis Company which is dedicated to advancing the art and science of floriculture through development of innovative products.

With a bachelor of science degree from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Skaff has taught advanced design courses at his alma mater. He also founded the student chapter of the American Institute of Floral Designers at the University of Massachusetts.
